THE ASSOCIATION OF CROYDON GOVERNORS
SUMMER TERM MEETING:
Wednesday 11th June 2008
VENUE:
Warrington Road, Croydon CR0 4BH
THE CHILDREN'S PLAN
'System reform to achieve world class standards and close the gap in
educational achievement for children from disadvantaged families’
Guest Speaker
Barbara Hughes
Interin Director of Children Young People and Learners How will the Children’s Plan make a difference to achievement in our Croydon Schools - What are the governance issues?
The Government wants to make this country the best place in the world for children and young people to grow up. The Children’s Plan sets out how the Department for Children, Schools and Families is going to achieve that – by putting the needs of families, children and young people at the centre of everything we do.
The ACG have invited Babara Hughes, to outline what the impact of the Children’s Plan will have on our schools. We have also asked her to outline the Secondary School Review and Croydon’s progress on Building Schools for the Future and the Primary Capital Programme.
This meeting will give governors to opportunity to continue the discussions on the future for Croydon schools – which began at our Spring Term Meeting on March 5th with Councillor Maria Gatland. Click here to see the discussions that took place together with more detailed information on The Children’s Plan.
Key Points of the Children’s Plan:
"stage not age" testing in schools
review of primary curriculum, including more help for summer-born children
better contact between schools and parents
parents' council in every secondary school
more help for children with special educational needs
all new teachers to be able to study for a Masters degree
To improve the quality of accountability and governance and in addition to our measures to strengthen parental engagement in schools we will:
make governing bodies more effective, beginning by consulting on reducing the size of governing bodies.
I do hope you will be able to join us.
